Ben Blevins
Welcome to my portfolio page.
My goal is to pursue and advance my career in visual design, marketing and
advertising. My passion is to further my expertise in creating advertising
concepts, and to utilize my skills in graphic design to make those concepts
a reality.
My love for design was realized in college. I was an engineering major for
the first 2.5 years. By chance, I took a design fundamentals course, which
changed my life and altered my career path. After that course, I changed my
major and my journey in Graphic Design began. Two years later and with a
3.5 GPA within my major, I graduated from
West Virginia Wesleyan College
with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Graphic Design.
Once I graduated, I accepted a position at a
textbook publishing firm.
It was mostly production work, which is typical for someone right out of college.
It was a great experience and taught me a lot about process and detail.
My next position was with a real estate investment firm.
Not exactly a creative design position either, but I was able to hone a whole
other set of skills. Mostly relating to the business world and using images to
display graphic information in a way people could understand.
After that, my journey in design led me to the healthcare field. I worked in
the advertising department of a company that manages hospitals throughout
the U.S. and I was the designer for several of them. This position was definitely
the most creative I’ve experienced so in my career. I started as a Junior Designer
and was promoted to Senior Designer during my time there. We were given creative
freedom and the chance to work in many different mediums within the print realm.
Anything you could imagine, we did, including some digital pieces like banner ads.
My website includes many of the pieces I created in my 11 years at
UHS, Inc.
What I liked about the job was not only my visual work, but also the conceptual
part. Marrying pictures with a common theme that is meant to persuade the viewer
was extremely rewarding for me. In some cases, I actually came up with some headlines
if I had a visual to match. To this day, I feel like this is where my strength lies.
I am currently a brand designer for a
pharmaceutical company.
I work completely in print, but don’t have much creative freedom. The lack of
creativity is what prompted me to take my design background to the next level:
web design. I know this is where the future lies and want to absorb all I can in
order to propel my career into the 21st century. I feel that having a design
background and knowing the fundamentals of web development will open new doors for me.
